Orange Knowledge Program Egypt
Capacity building in climate smart agriculture (2020-2022)
Bureau Leeters, in cooperation with Aeres University of Applied Sciences and Land Water Food Consult implements a tailormade training program in Egypt, addressing climate smart agricultural practices in crop production. The project aims to achieve climate resilience at farm level and at the same time establishes strategic ties between the public sector (Ministries, research and educational institutions) and the private sector. Public officers in the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and teachers of Kafrelsheik University and vocational schools in the Egyptian Nile Delta are the main beneficiaries.
The Egyptian agriculture faces challenges which have to do with climate change and water scarcity. Key themes within the strategy of Egypt, among other things, are climate smart agriculture and efficient water management. In both themes the Netherlands has a lot to offer. The project implementers demonstrate technologies and practices in various fields, including irrigation and drainage systems, water reuse and water harvesting, sensor technology, adaptation and mitigation strategies to tackle the impact of extreme weather, prolonged droughts and salinization, use of drought and salt tolerant crops/varieties. The project is partly funded by Nuffic within the framework of the Orange Knowledge Program.
